The History of the Republic
2007 - Domination
After a great 2006 on the field and socially, it would be difficult to follow on in 2007. One exciting development in the Republic was the addition of a junior team – the Wieners – who would take part in the social league.

League
Another new season, and more comings and goings of players… this year Frank Allen, Paul and Mark Turner, Peter Winchomb, Deepak and Olly Riches all debuted for us.
Despite no-one scoring a century or taking five wickets all season, we won 8/9 regular league games to win the ‘minor premiership’, again showing that we have a great squad of players with everyone contributing.
The Devils beat Pudong in the play-off, so we squared up to them in the final again. For the second season is succession the 12th man was called upon to play at the last minute, but it didn’t affect the team and a discipline bowling performance restricted the Devils to just 139 from their 35 overs. We wobbled at one stage, but Jeremy Rom and Sam Hunt combined in an unbeaten fifth wicket partnership of 80 to see us home.
We were the first team to both retain the title and win both the minor premiership and the grand final .
Santa Fe-Kooka Pies Sixes
This is a two day sixes tournament prior to the international sixes, and was the only tournament at that stage that the Hot Dogs had not won. Some wonderful batting by Waqar Khattak on the finals day helped us reach the final, in which we again defeated the Devils, this time with 3 balls to spare.
Shanghai International Sixes
Having won the last two tournaments, it was made quite clear that no-one wanted us to win for a third time…
We started about as well as possible, with a crushing 85 run victory, but thereafter it was extremely hard work, with every team raising their game when they played us. We eventually finished top of our group and in so doing qualified for the cup, but only after one last ball finish and a bowl-off victory in a tied game against one of the Beijing teams.
We came through another tight match in the semi-final, to set up a third clash against the Devils who had looked very good in their half of the draw. In difficult conditions, the Devils scored 54 which given the outfield was a very competitive total. Good batting from Sam Hunt and Grant Horsfield kept us up with the run rate, before Andre Casson came in… a crucial six kept us up with the run rate, and we eventually scored one of the last ball to retain the title.
Santa Fe-Kooka Pies T20
This was a new 20 over competition at the end of the season, again over two Sundays. We beat the Bashers in the semi-final, and came up against a strong Pudong CC side who outplayed us and deservedly won the tournament. If this was anything to go by, next season will be a tough one!

The Wieners
The Wieners this season comprised 8 juniors, aged 12-16, captained by Mark Turner, coached by Mike Tsesmelis, and with various parents and Social Dogs bolstering the team as required. They participated in the 20-over Social League, playing against the social team of the Hot Dogs, Bashers and Pudong, as well as the Dulwich College teachers, and Chinese university teams.
The first few games of the season were very tough, and included two against Dulwich where most of the Wieners attend school… but their teachers by and large did them no favours! The experience was invaluable, and the boys progressed tremendously though as the season went on, taking a number of teams close and finishing the year with wins against Pudong and Tong Ji.
Mark was the most consistent with the bat scoring a number of fifties, with Conrad, Finn and Andrew making increasing contributions throughout the year. The whole team bowled well, in particular the two spinners, Yanish and Nick. Yanish was one of few players in the whole league to take five wickets in an innings.
