The History of the Republic

2006 – The Birth of the Republic

The season began as usual with a number of new faces, again under the captaincy of Chad Blewitt who had secured the Hot Dogs first full trophy in the International Sixes at the end of the previous season.

The Social Hot Dogs were also conceived and to be led by David Frame, in the inaugural season of the Social League.

Official statistics and written reports are scarce from 2006, and with memories adversely affected by post-match celebration (even when we lost), this season, perhaps fittingly, will be remembered simply as the dawn of a new era.

Whilst the squad as usual included some very talented cricketers, the objective for the season was first and foremost to have fun on a Sunday, and this was aided by some spectacular South African style post-match fines sessions (while these remain an institution, for the sake of marriages, jobs and life expectancy, these have since been scaled back).

As team spirit rose throughout the season results improved and we became an extremely competitive unit. Central to this was the idea that everyone played their part, and that it didn’t matter which 11 represented us, they would between them score enough runs and take enough wickets to get us over the line. On June 18th, after a victory over the Devils and in the paddling pool somewhere between a fines session and the Blue Frog, players debated the inner workings of the team, our culture of freedom of speech and everyone contributing. It was unanimously agreed that we needed to ascend from being a mere cricket club and became the Democratic People’s Republic of the Hot Dogs.

The records show that we won four of our last 5 games to finished second with 4 wins, 3 losses and 2 no results from our 9 games.

In the semi-final we took on and comfortably beat Pudong, to set up a match against the Devils, and with unstoppable momentum we claimed our first ever league title. A full report of that game is available.

In September we entered the International Sixes as defending champions, and became only the second team to retain the trophy (after the Shanghai Dragons 2000, 2001).
