The History of the Republic
2005 – International Glory
35-over League
With a number of key players leaving Shanghai during the close-season, 2005 was always going to be a tough season, and the rebuilding process seemed to continue thoughout… a total of 45 players turned out for the Hot Dogs in 2005.
We carried our form over from the end of the previous season, losing the first three games, before securing successive victories over the Bashers and the Maharajahs. We then lost 4 of the next 5 games, leaving us in danger of not making 3rd place and the play-offs, but wins in the last two games of the season against Pudong and the Bashers meant we finished comfortably 3rd and would face Pudong in the play-off.
No-one seems to be able to remember the semi, so it must have been a disappointing defeat!
Shanghai International Sixes
2005 was the first year that the four Shanghai league clubs were allowed to enter the Shanghai International Sixes. The role of the Shanghai Dragons – a side selected from the best players of all four clubs – and who should be in it was hotly debated in bars from Jinqiao to Ju Lu Lu, and the controversial omission of Hot Dogs Alex Wyatt and Andre Casson from the Dragons squad proved to be decisive.
To win the tournament, teams must finish top of their group, and each of the winners then goes into knock-out semi-finals. The Hot Dogs and the Dragons were drawn against each other in the group, and some early Martin Hill magic removed the Dragons danger-men, Jason Bird and Sanjay Anugula. A solid disciplined bowling performance set the stage for Alex and Andre to chase down the score with some excellent batting and running between the wickets, and the Dragons were out and Hot Dogs through to the semis.
Convincing wins in both the semi-final and final saw the Hot Dogs become the first of the domestic Shanghai teams to lift the trophy.
